  • Robert Coles, both educator and poet, began his career in 1972 teaching African Literature at Temple University in Pennsylvania. He earned a PhD in American Literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1979. He went on to teach at Howard University, Fordham University, and Berea College. In 1989 he joined the faculty at Hampshire College in Massachusetts where he also taught African Literature and Prison Literature before retiring in 2009 to pursue writing full-time. In 1999 he published a monograph titled, Black Writers Abroad. During the late 1990s and early 2000s Coles began research on the life and work of African Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. His memoir, Pursuing Alexander Pushkin was published in 2024. He has also written a film biopic about Alexander Pushkin, which has already won numerous screenplay awards. Coles has published over one hundred poems in periodicals, magazines, and anthologies since 1983. His chapbook Personalities was published by Moonstone Arts Center in 2024.
